Life as a Sponsored Fighter at Sumalee Boxing Gym – My First Month in Thailand

Settling into Life at Sumalee

Landing in Phuket, Thailand and stepping into Sumalee Boxing Gym has been mad, but in the best way possible. From day one, everyone’s been welcoming, from the trainers to the other fighters. The accommodation’s nice, the gym’s got everything you need, and the vibe? 10/10. No complaints at all.

The trainers are unreal. They make you feel like you’ve been there for years, always showing love, always making sure you’re improving. When you’re grinding twice a day, you need that energy around you. It’s not just about throwing kicks and punches – they’re making sure I’m getting my ring IQ up, thinking more, moving smarter.

Fight Life – Straight Out the Gate

I’ve had two fights in the first month, both wrapped up in round one. I can’t lie, it’s been a solid start. Back home in the UK, I’ve had a bunch of fights, but this? This was different. My first pro fight, new country, new scene – proper nerve-wracking but exciting at the same time. The energy in a Thai stadium is unreal. But once you step in, it’s just you and your opponent. And trust me, it feels great getting that hand raised at the end.

Training – More Than Just Throwing Hands

It’s mad how much training goes into this. It’s not just about smashing pads and bag work; the cardio levels here are next level. You’re out here running in the heat, drilling technique over and over, and sharpening your fight IQ. I’m learning how to outsmart my opponents, not just outwork them. Every session, I’m soaking up knowledge, getting sharper, getting faster, and getting my mind right.

And the trainers? They’re the heart of this place. I have a lot of respect for them. They talk to you, joke with you, but when it’s time to train, they make sure you’re pushing yourself. They don’t just treat you like a random fighter passing through – they make you feel like family.

The Thai Lifestyle – Training, Eating, Living

People keep asking me, “How’s the food?” To be honest, I’m a picky eater. I eat the same thing pretty much every day. But the food at The Nutrition Station has been amazing.. Everything I’ve had has been solid, proper fresh, keeps me fuelled up for training. And being in Thailand, you just adapt. You wake up, train, eat, chill, train again, and before you know it, the day’s done.

The lifestyle is all about discipline. You aren’t out here partying every night – you’re here to fight, to improve, to level up. And when you’re surrounded by people on the same mission, it pushes you even harder.

Looking Ahead

One month in, and I’m feeling good. I’ve settled in, got my first couple of wins under my belt, and I’m just focused on the next steps. More fights, more learning, more growth. Sumalee has been nothing but love, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.

For anyone thinking about coming out here, whether it’s for training, fighting, or just getting a taste of the Muay Thai life – do it. You won’t regret it.
