Local Tours
If arranging a tour with an outside company, it is advisable to speak to staff in the office first. We have a number of ‘tried and tested’ tour operators with whom we are able to negotiate preferential rates.
In the middle of the island, just fifteen minutes drive from the airport; Sumalee Phuket is set in an old banana and coconut plantation. The countryside behind Sumalee is undeveloped and unspoilt. it is possible to take a number of running routes directly from Sumalee.
The gym’s central location means it is within easy reach of all the main tourist attractions and three of the island’s most famous west coast beaches: Surin Beach (well known for surfing in monsoon season); Bang Tao Beach (with its upscale hotels and 8 km stretch); and Nai Yang Beach (perfect for the Kite Surfing enthusiast). At these beaches please observe the Red Flag warnings as drowning is one of the biggest causes of tourist deaths on the island, especially during the monsoon. For those looking for a quieter spot, on the east coast it is possible to find completely deserted beaches within easy reach of Sumalee.
There is a wide selection of restaurants, bars and nightlife in the surrounding area, particularly in the Bang Tao, Cherng Talay and Laguna areas. In the immediate vicinity of Sumalee there are many local Thai restaurants and bars offering extremely good value for money. We encourage our guests to use these as much as possible to support the local Thai economy. We particularly recommend Krua Praya which is immediately behind Sumalee and has been awarded a Michelin Plate. Recently a Robinson’s Lifestyle Mall has opened within 10 minutes walk of the gym. The Mall contains many food concessions and a variety of stores including a well respected supermarket named Topps.
Slightly further away is Paeng-Prai Restaurant outside Bang Pae waterfall. It is one of Phuket’s hidden culinary gems. Bang Pae Seafood is a waterfront restaurant and is also very near the waterfall. At the Boat Lagoon there is a variety of restaurants including Italian and Indian. There are a number of cafés too such as The Hardstand and De Lucca. Within 5 kms there is one of the best fusion Thai restaurants on the island, Suay. Please ask Lynne or Sam for more details on the different options.
Cherng Talay and the Laguna area, approximately 8 kms away, have a wide selection of coffee shops, restaurants and bars designed to appeal to western tastes. We particularly recommend, Wine Connection (bistro style), Black Cat (mixture of Thai and French influenced international food), Sunset (value for money and tasty Thai and international food), Luca Cini (Italian); Levantine (middle eastern food) and Tatonka (fusion cuisine).
There is so much to see and do in the local area. The following gives a flavour of the variety available. Please ask Lynne for more information.
